Mass intentions

Mass of the Departed & Intentions

Offering a Mass for a special intention (sometimes called a votive mass), particularly for the deceased, is an ancient Catholic tradition. The earliest evidence is from second century inscriptions from the Roman catacombs.  St. Augustine (d. 430) in his Confessions records the dying wish of his mother St. Monica: "One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be." The offering of a Mass for the departed is an expression of the belief of the Communion of Saints, that though our loved ones may have died, they are still united with the living and held in the heart of God eternally. This ultimate expression of our communal faith may bring some comfort to the bereaved. Votive masses may also be said for the sick, in remembrance of a birthday or anniversary, or some particular thanksgiving to God.

Grace Church will send a mass card to you and to a person of your choice to notify them that a Mass is being offered at your request. Votive masses are free and may not be purchased, but it is often customary to make a donation that would go toward the mission and ministry of Grace Church in Newark.

Please fill out the following form to arrange a Mass said for a special intention.

The mass will be said on the next available weekday, though we can also try to accommodate specific days for anniversaries, etc., or if you would like to be in attendance. Please indicate desired date for the mass, if you have a preference:
