A History of Grace Church in Newark

Grace Church in Newark was founded in 1837 to be the standard-bearer for Anglo-Catholicism in northern New Jersey.

Our Gothic Revival church building, erected in 1848, is a Registered National Landmark and was designed by Richard Upjohn (who also designed Trinity Church, Wall Street, NYC).

Grace Church has a history of fine liturgy and music. The first prominent organist was Samuel Augustus Ward, who wrote the famous melody for "America the Beautiful."
