The Choir School at
Grace Church in Newark

To create and nurture musical artistry and leadership among Newark-area youth; to offer the gift of fine music to the community of Newark and surrounding areas; and to foster the future of classical music in Newark, the Episcopal Church, and in the parish of Grace Church.

For many years, a Choir of Men and Boys led the music at Grace Church. A boy choir existed as early as 1858, when a journalist visiting the church described his delight upon hearing the boys lead a service. In 2012, a few years after the Men and Boys choir was disbanded in 2006, the Grace Church Choir School was founded, this time admitting both boys and girls. Though still young, this program has already positively affected the lives of several children and youth from the Newark area.

What we do

The Choir School at Grace Church in Newark trains children and youth in singing, develops leadership, and fosters character. It gives children of all ability levels the opportunity to participate in a great musical tradition over a century old! Students of the choir school will see their leadership, discipline, and character blossom, and will receive invaluable musical training which they will appreciate for the rest of their lives. This program is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM America) and develops musicianship through RSCM’s Voice for Life program. In addition, students will be full participants in an active and well-regarded church music program, collaborating with professional musicians, and perform regularly at Grace Church and at other venues.

Who can join

All children in 3rd-12th grade can join the Choir School. In some cases, children in 2nd grade who are already proficient readers may join as well. No audition is necessary; we believe that all children can be taught to sing. The choir is not only limited to treble voices; boys with changed voices are welcome to join as well. Choristers in the Choir School need not be members of Grace Church.

There is no tuition. All instruction is completely free of charge. Families who are able are encouraged to give to Grace Church through stewardship and/or through the Music Society to help ensure this program continues.

Rehearsals are scheduled every Thursday from 4:30-6:00 pm and Saturday from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Rehearsal time includes the preparation of music for upcoming performances in addition to group and individual instruction on music theory, vocal technique, and musical skills.
